Shymkent musician Alisher Olzhabay, who has performed on stage many times, playing drums to the applause of audiences, now wears a military uniform and serves in Military Unit 5573 of the National Guard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At first glance, the stage and military formation may seem like completely different worlds. However, for Alisher, they have one thing in common — music.
The decision of the professional drummer to pursue a career in military service was influenced by information he came across on TikTok and Instagram. Through social media, Alisher learned that the National Guard’s military bands offer opportunities for professional musicians. Without hesitation, he decided to continue doing what he loved while serving in the military. Thus, a single social media video became the starting point of a new chapter in his life.
Of course, professional musical skills do not exempt a serviceman from military discipline. During his first days of service, Private Alisher Olzhabay completed drill training and adapted to the daily routine. While he was accustomed to following a conductor’s movements in music, in the military he learned to carefully follow his commander’s orders.
At the same time, he continues to develop his musical skills during his military service. The military bands of the National Guard are an integral part of official ceremonies and military rituals. Experience and professional musicianship are particularly valued in these ensembles. Therefore, the skills Alisher acquired on stage have found practical application in the military environment.
Drummers play a particularly important role during military parades and ceremonial events. The sound of the drum is an important part of military ritual: it sets the rhythm of the formation and emphasizes the solemnity of the occasion.
Recognizing Alisher’s professional abilities, the orchestra team has supported him and given him the opportunity to pursue music during his free time.
In the future, Alisher plans to continue his service under contract and perform as part of the National Guard’s military orchestra.
